About Us
Challenger Soccer is a program for the mentally and physically disabled children in our community. The mission of Challenger Soccer is to give every child a chance to play soccer in the community. Our goal is to also improve the player's endurance, coordination and social skills. The Challenger season runs between September through late October every Sunday for an hour. Every player is given a jersey and there is an end of the year party which is accompanied by a trophy ceremony. The players learn about soccer while being cheered and encouraged on by the crowd. Under the adult supervision of Bonnie Spurr and Dr Fred G Arrigg, Jr., the players and buddies create incredible bonds of friendship. How it Works: All challenger players will meet at the field Sunday afternoons during the fall and join in fun games such as, "sleeping spiders", "don't wake the giant", and "foxes and rabbits". Each player is assigned a buddy who assists the player in following directions, dribbling the ball, scoring goals and most importantly, having fun. The soccer buddies are high school kids whose job is to simply be a friend and talk to the player, help him/her kick and shoot the ball, keep the child's attention on the game and ensure the safety of the child. We have found this approach to be rewarding for both the players and the buddies. With the "buddy system", parents are able to take a deserved break and cheer on their children from the sidelines. |
